Man Utd make huge transfer U-turn as Ruben Amorim cancels plan for £25m swoop
Manchester United have shelved plans to sign a new goalkeeper - after being told Andre Onana could be fit for the start of the new season.
Onana is winning his race to be available for the opening Premier League game at home to Arsenal. The Cameroon international suffered a hamstring injury in the first week of pre-season training, which threatened to rule him out of the start of the new campaign.
Onana's injury also raised the prospect of United having to go into the market to buy a new keeper as cover for the 29-year-old.
United boss Ruben Amorim had considered making a swoop for Aston Villa's £25m-rated Emiliano Martinez. But it is understood Onana's injury is a strain rather than a tear, and not as bad as first thought.
He is responding well to treatment from United's medical team and ahead of schedule in his recovery.
Although Onana will miss United's pre-season opener against Leeds in Stockholm on Saturday, he will travel with the rest of the squad for the three-game tour of the US.
Amorim and his squad leave next week for the States, where they will play West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton as part of the Premier League Summer Series.
Onana will not feature in the opening two games, in New York and Chicago. But United are hopeful he will have recovered in time to be involved in the final game in Atlanta.
United, meanwhile, have not given up hope of striking a deal with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo despite having seen two bids turned down, with Brentford holding out for £70m.
Brentford have asked United to restructure how the deal is financed, with United hoping a compromise can be reached in time for Mbeumo to join them before the new campaign kicks off
Matheus Cunha remains United's only signing of the summer transfer window, while no player departures have been agreed.
