Jaxson Dart has all the pressure now after Giants dumped Russell Wilson
It took just three games for the New York Giants to bench Russell Wilson and turn to rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. With the Giants selecting Dart in the first round of the 2025 Draft, it was inevitable that he’d eventually be the starter — it was just a matter of when. That question is finally answered, as Dart will make his first start in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
While there aren’t many complaints about New York starting Dart, it is fair to ask if the Giants gave up on Wilson too soon. Obviously, the rookie quarterback is the future, but did New York overreact to two bad games from Wilson?
Did the Giants make the right decision by benching Russell Wilson?
There aren’t many people who are going to defend Wilson, because his play this year makes it hard to do so. In Week 1, he completed 46% of his passes for 168 yards. In Week 2, everything looked great, as the veteran completed 73% of his passes for 450 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. In Week 3, though, it was back bad, as Wilson only completed 56% of his passes for 160 yards and two interceptions.
However, the offensive problems aren’t all on him. The offensive line hasn’t been good, and the offensive coaching staff has also been thoroughly outcoached. Additionally, Wilson’s outing on Sunday was bad, but it was also against a Kansas City Chiefs defense that also held the Philadelphia Eagles to 101 passing yards.
This is all to say that Russell Wilson wasn’t the sole problem for the Giants offense, and a case could be made that he should still be in the starting lineup. The truth of the matter, though, is that New York had to make this change because Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen are trying to save their jobs. Rolling the dice on Dart is pretty much their last hope.
Ultimately, whether this is the right decision or not all depends on whether Jaxson Dart is ready. If he’s ready to be QB1, it doesn’t matter if Russell Wilson was actually the problem or not, because Dart is the future, and there’s no need to hold him back if he’s prepared — especially since the team is 0-3. If he isn’t ready, though, the Giants’ disaster will only get worse.
