Sky News paused for urgent Donald Trump breaking alert in major blow to Starmer

Sky News was halted to deliver a breaking update about US President Donald Trump - but it was bad news for the UK's Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. It comes as Trump has announced that he will raise global tariffs from 10% to 15% on countries "many of which", he claims, have been "ripping off the US for decades".

The news channel shared that Trump had posted the announcement to social media, on Truth Social, as he stated the changes would be "effective immediately". The president said that the decision has been made based on a thorough review of the US Supreme Court's "extraordinarily anti-American decision" to strike down his sweeping tariffs. He wrote: "During the next short number of months, the Trump Administration will determine and issue the new and legally permissible tariffs, which will continue our extraordinarily successful process of Making America Great Again - GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!"

The news follows the US Supreme Court striking down Trump's tariffs, saying that the president's decision to use a law reserved for national emergencies overstepped his authority.

However, Trump maintained it was his "right" to set tariffs because he is president, and the "language was clear".

The president also complained about having to "wait for this decision" from the Supreme Court.

Trump called the decision "deeply disappointing". He later derided the court on social media, calling the ruling "ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American".

The British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) has said the Supreme Court decision "does little to clear the murky waters for business".

It's bad news for Starmer as a White House official said that countries that struck trade deals with the US, including the UK, India and the EU, will now face the global 10% tariff rather than the tariff rate they had previously negotiated.

The Trump administration expects those countries to keep abiding by the concessions they had agreed to under the trade deals, the official added.
